All the tutorials below are based on the versions they were written for. Although users of previous and newer versions are welcome to try the tutorials the author cannot state what results will be achieved. Many changes, some subtle and others not so subtle, are made with each program revision. Although many steps and directions would be generic some may not be. The same can be said for tools between versions. Older versions may not have the same tools and newer versions may have simplified techniques that alleviate some of the long drawn out methods needed for earlier versions.  D. Cheke

TurboCAD Pro 2015 - Boardroom

From the Introduction:

A common request for theme specific TurboCAD tutorials has always been interior architectural renderings. Although a number of architectural specific tutorials have been penned over the years, never before has it been more important to look at this topic than it is since the implementation of RedSDK.

Within the tutorial the reader will be led through each keystroke to recreate the boardroom that is illustrated on the cover of the tutorial. A few items are supplied to help keep the tutorial time to a manageable amount. Supplied models include the molded chair, the light switches, the recycle bin and the Barcelona love seat. Aside from learning how to draw in TurboCAD, the user will learn how to set up the drawing and how to insert standard lighting. The reader will learn how to establish a render scene environment and establish render scene luminance. The reader will also learn how to render their drawing and save it in a high resolution image format.

TurboCAD Pro 2015 - Molded Stacking Chair

From the Introduction:

Not so long ago I saw a MoI tutorial by Michael A. Maynard that illustrates the steps required to create a molded plastic stacking chair. The chair looks very cool and I thought that it would be terrific if we could create it in TurboCAD. MoI makes the process somewhat easy since it has a 'Flow' tool that allows a user to basically project one shape onto another. Unfortunately, TurboCAD does not possess such a tool and an alternate means is needed to create the molded shape that is crucial to the design. Luckily TurboCAD Pro Platinum has some sheet metal tools which will make the creation of the chair possible. Although we will not get as elaborate as Mike does in his tutorial, we will work towards a very decent representation of it.

I hope that you enjoy the tutorial. Best regards, Don Within the tutorial the reader will be lead through each keystroke to produce every component of the molded stacking chair that is illustrated on the cover of the tutorial. The reader will also learn how to insert standard RedSDK lighting and will learn how to establish a RedSDK render scene environment. Additionally, the reader will learn how to render their drawing and save it in a high resolution image format.

TurboCAD Pro V21.2 - Curio Cabinet

From the Introduction:

It is time for a woodworker's tutorial and what better construct than an elegant curio cabinet with a semi-complex design.

Unlike most of the tutorials offered by the author, this particular tutorial is approached with a 'design as we go' format. As such, there is the occasional design change made within the tutorial. Making changes helps illustrate the thinking behind designing and illustrates methods to edit parts as needed due to design changes. Making changes is definitely something a designer will need to know how to do as he or she proceeds with all future designs.

Within the tutorial the reader will be lead through each keystroke to produce every component of the curio cabinet that is illustrated on the cover of the tutorial (with the exception of some downloaded standardized parts that get inserted). The reader will also learn how to insert standard lighting, will learn how to utilize render scene luminance and establish a render scene environment. Additionally, the reader will learn how to render their drawing and save it in a high resolution image format.

TurboCAD Pro V21.1 - 5 Cylinder Radial Engine

From the Introduction:

The Radial Engine tutorial was originally written for TurboCAD Pro V15, but it has been fully updated for TurboCAD Pro v21.

I have wanted to create a tutorial for a radial engine for eons but always felt a bit intimidated by the idea. However, like any good modeler, I decided to face the challenge and see what I could come up with. To my surprise and pleasure, the task was not terribly difficult in the end. It just required some forethought, a bit of time spent researching and the drive to make it happen, which I already have in spades, as the saying goes. Although I based the radial engine on some internet photos I found while researching, much of the model was made up as I experimented with the design.

I hope that you will enjoy following the tutorial and will feel the magic of TurboCAD that I feel every time I create something with the program.

Best regards,
Don

TurboCAD Pro V21 - Executive Jet

From the Introduction:

Lofting profiles in TurboCAD to create organic shapes is usually the route taken to create such things as airplanes, boats and cars. Since TurboCAD is not a NURBS  based 3D modeling package it is not always easy to get the desired results and most often a user must live with a lesser degree of precision. Be that as it may, these organic shapes can be created in TurboCAD to some degree with some planning, some experimentation and a strong desire to make it happen.

The executive jet in this tutorial will be approached more like one would proceed with a modeling program than one might with precision CAD software. Much of the detail will be created by 'tracing' strategically positioned and scaled images. As such, a reader may find that the input data listed within the tutorial may not be exactly as what is seen on their own desktop. This does not mean that the tutorial cannot be followed, but the reader must be aware that this is the case and that they must use their data in place of what is written in the tutorial. This will become clearer as the tutorial progresses and it is not something that should cause any grief.

Those who have worked through the Textual Creation tutorial known as Airliner (from v15) will notice many similarities in this tutorial. Be that as it may, a number of areas in this tutorial are approached differently and some areas expanded upon. This tutorial also includes a short boat hull lofting lessen at the end to demonstrate a different form of lofting, one not used while creating the Executive Jet.

Within the tutorial the reader will be lead through each keystroke to produce every component of the executive jet that is illustrated on the cover of the tutorial. Aside from learning how to draw in TurboCAD, the user will learn how use materials (including UV wrapping), how to insert standard lighting and how to utilize render scene luminance. The reader will learn how to establish a render scene environment and the reader will learn how to render their drawing and save it in a high resolution image format.

TurboCAD Pro V21 - Drawing Template
Create Reusable Drawing Templates
Including ANSI A, B, C and D Size Sheets

Note that the large foprmat printer is not created during the tutorial, it is only a prop for the book cover.

From the Introduction:
One of the fundamental tenets of any CAD package is to never draw the same thing twice. This is very sound advice and a user would be wise to broaden this tenet to its fullest definition. This not only includes using blocks and symbols while drawing but it includes devising ways to approach the more mundane things such as repeating text and establishing tool properties or styles. One way to address much of this is to create a drawing template(s) where many properties have been pre-established and which includes at least one paper space page that has a reusable title block.

Within the tutorial the reader will be led through each keystroke to produce four ANSI size reusable TurboCAD templates with title blocks. These are based on the mechanical style the author uses in his daily work with one client within the manufacturing industry. The reader will find much discussion within the pages of this tutorial that will hopefully provide good insight into choices that are made.

TurboCAD Pro V20.1 – Sheet Metal Box
(With UV Wrapped Texture)

From the Introduction:

The Sheet Metal Box tutorial is a narrow focus tutorial that looks specifically at two processes. The first is the ability to bend sheet objects and the second is the ability to wrap an image texture to the bent results. Although the ability to bend sheets, via the Bend tool, has been available in the Platinum version of TurboCAD for a number of versions the ability to effectively wrap these bent objects has not, at least not in an easy and efficient manner. With the arrival of TurboCAD V20 and its new UV Wrapping tools the user now has the ability to effectively wrap these bent objects. As with any new tool, the process has a bit of a learning curve and it is the hope of the author that this short tutorial will help users come to grips with the new process.

Please be advised that the Platinum edition of TurboCAD V20 is required to create sheet metal box. A 3D box is supplied, however, for those who want to learn about UV Wrapping but only possess the basic version of TurboCAD Pro

Within the tutorial the reader will be led through each keystroke to create the tissue box illustrated on the cover of the tutorial. Aside from learning how to draw in TurboCAD, the user will learn how to insert standard lighting and how to utilize render scene luminance. TurboCAD Pro V20.1 – Construction Drawings

From the Introduction:

At one point in time I received an email with a request to create a tutorial that would lead a reader through the steps necessary to create a set of construction drawings. The request specified a double hung window or an entry door. Initially I had my mind set on illustrating the double hung window but it quickly became apparent that the window was just too complex to fit into a tutorial of reasonable length. The entry door, although complex enough, requires fewer components and so seemed much more suitable for a tutorial. It is by all means adequate to illustrate the processes necessary to create a set of construction drawings.

This tutorial was originally written for TurboCAD Pro V15 but has been fully revised and updated for TurboCAD Pro V20.1. There have been many great additions to the program since V15.

I hope that you will enjoy the tutorial as much as I had creating it.

Best regards, Don

Within the tutorial the reader will be led through each keystroke to create the framed 36" entry door illustrated on the cover of the tutorial. Aside from learning how to draw in TurboCAD, the user will learn how to insert standard lighting and how to render their drawing and save it in a high resolution image format. The reader will also learn how to utilize paper space where the construction drawings will be created utilizing viewports, inserted drafting palette objects (views/inserts), dimensions and annotations.

TurboCAD Pro V20 – Pneumatic Cylinder

From the Introduction:

TurboCAD is an exceptional tool when it comes to creating CAD drawings and 3D visuals. One of the great benefits that come from modeling in 3D using TurboCAD is that once the 3D model is created a near infinite number of views can be established. These views can include a variety of environments, lighting schemes and embellishments. The TurboCAD user can also create many styles of visuals that include exploded views, section views and even cutaway views, the latter of which is what will be worked toward in this tutorial.

Readers of earlier Textual Creations TurboCAD tutorials will recognize the pneumatic cylinder within this tutorial as the model from the Textual Creations tutorial Mechanical Illustration V11.2 & V15.1. Modeling in V20 is essentially the same, with a number of processes simplified along the way, but the final result is much more refined.

Within the tutorial the reader will be led through each keystroke to create the pneumatic cylinder that is illustrated on the cover of the tutorial. Aside from learning how to draw in TurboCAD, the user will learn how to insert standard lighting and how to utilize render scene luminance. The reader will learn how to establish a render scene environment and the reader will learn how to render their drawing and save it in a high resolution image format.

From the Introduction:

TurboCAD is, without a doubt, the ideal companion for any cabinet maker needing to lay out kitchens in a timely manner. This is especially so if a user spends some initial time creating a modular cabinet system that makes resizing and placing cabinets a breeze. The benefits don't stop there. Once the layout is established a user can easily create dimensioned drawings and realistic renders to share with those in the shop, with one's marketing team and with prospective customers.

Within the tutorial the reader will be led through each keystroke to create a modular cabinet system that will be used to create the kitchen scene illustrated on the cover of the tutorial. To help create a much more pleasing final scene the author has supplied several household items (created in TurboCAD) that the user will place during the tutorial. TurboCAD Pro V19.2 – Exterior Architectural Setting

From the Introduction:

For the last couple of years it has been my pleasure to have a large US national advertizing company as a client. The sales teams for this ad company will often make presentations to many of the big name chain stores businesses that we all see in our daily travels. These chains include clothing stores, restaurants, grocery stores, home stores and even car dealerships. Pretty much wherever one would find a larger market for ads – especially signs and product displays.

My roll has been to create many of these environments in 3D and include the proposed ad material within the 3D environments. The overall 3D presentation has often taken many forms, some of which show the overall environments in a gray-scale render format with the new ad material in full color (as in selective coloring). Some have been created in full color but without the surrounding environment, while still others have been created in full color and do include a full surrounding environment. They are all quite fun to create but do offer some challenges. I will often receive one or two photos for reference and asked to create a scene such as the one pictured in the reference material and to include the attached signage. Of course, there are no blueprints provided to make the job easier so it is a matter of doing my best to replicate the scene (or improve upon it). For the most part I just rely on my limited knowledge of commercial buildings and occasionally on data I have found via a Google search (for fixture dimensions, etc). Including a surrounding environment is one thing that proved very challenging at first. This was mostly due to the fact that I did not have access to a good selection of photographic backgrounds that could be used within TurboCAD or added afterward via Photoshop. I did find a solution that proved to be quite adequate and I will share that, along with many other details of the whole creation process, within the tutorial.

I really enjoy the process of creating these 3D architectural scenes and find that TurboCAD has been such a tremendous partner for helping get the job done in a timely manner. With the addition of 64-Bit technology I can now add more detail than ever before in TurboCAD and render without issue.

I hope that you enjoy working through the tutorial.

Best regards,
Don

TurboCAD Pro V19.2 – Roll Top Computer Desk

From the Introduction:

Many requests have been made of the author to create a tutorial that would lead a woodworker through all the stages of a modern furniture design project. It was hoped that the tutorial would show how to use the program in such a way that a two-dimensional design concept could be turned into a three dimensional model for client presentation and that shop drawings could be created from the 2D and 3D drawings. This tutorial is the result of those requests.

Construction note - the following design will be based on the use of 19 mm wood panels for construction  and the cabinet components will be assembled, for the most part, using plate joinery biscuits.

Within the tutorial, the reader will learn how to create all the 2D and 3D components required to create the modern roll top desk and accompanying drawings that are illustrated on the cover of the tutorial. Aside from learning how to draw in TurboCAD, the user will learn how to set up the drawing and how to insert standard lighting. The reader will learn how to establish render scene luminance and a render scene environment. The reader will also learn how to render their drawing and save it in a high resolution image format. Each workplane tool, complete with a user-friendly explanation and example will be illustrated within this tutorial and this will be done by having the reader work through various examples keystroke by keystroke. By the time the reader reaches the end of this tutorial any confusion about workplanes should have lessened significantly.

TurboCAD Pro V19.1 - Drawing Template

TurboCAD Pro V18.2 – Bill of Materials

From the Introduction:

An important part of any design scheme is the ability to create a list of parts and materials used within a drawing. Although TurboCAD does not have a dedicated bill of materials function per se it does come with some tools that can be used to create a report that can be used in the production of a bill of materials. All of the initial work is done right in TurboCAD and through the onboard export functions some additional automation can be added using Microsoft Excel or other such spreadsheet software.

Within the tutorial the reader will be led through each keystroke to produce all components of the night stand that is illustrated on the cover of the tutorial, with the exception of the hardware which has been supplied. Aside from learning how to draw in TurboCAD, the user will learn how to set up the drawing and how to insert standard lighting. The reader will learn how to establish render scene luminance and a render scene environment. The reader will also learn how to render their drawing and save it in a high resolution image format. The reader will also learn what steps to take to give custom attributes to all the parts of the night stand and how to create a detailed report for use in a final Excel bill of materials. The user will also learn how to use the layout tool to create a cutting plan, a plan that could be exported and perhaps used in conjunction with one's cnc machine.

TurboCAD Pro V18.1 – Preparing a Model for Final Rendering

From the Introduction:

If there has been one area where I have received more tutorial requests than any other it has to be for a tutorial that looks specifically at Materials, Lighting and Environment. In essence - preparing a drawing for a final render.

As daunting a task as this was, I decided that it was high time to make it a reality. To aid in the task I have decided to forgo creating a model during the tutorial, which is always time consuming. As such, I am providing a model that will serve as the subject matter (the MP3 Player), thus allowing all tutorial time to be spent on the three desired areas - that of Materials Application, Lighting (Standard and Luminance) and Environment. All three areas require review as all three affect one another at every level. This is one of the main reasons that so many users struggle with these particular TurboCAD functions......

Best regards,
Don

Within the tutorial the reader will be led through each keystroke to produce the rendered MP3 player that is illustrated on the cover of the tutorial. The reader will learn about the relationship between materials, lighting and scene and what it takes to get decent results. The user will also learn how to set up the drawing and how to insert standard lighting. The reader will learn how to establish render scene luminance and a render scene environment. The reader will also learn how to render their drawing and save it in a high resolution image format. Unfortunately, the reader will also learn that there is not one quick and easy setting that will work for every drawing – that experimentation and persistence is key to success.

TurboCAD Pro V18.1 - Antique Cannon

From the Introduction:

The antique cannon is a pretty remarkable device when one considers the carpentry and blacksmith skills that are required to construct and continually maintain its structure when dealing with the forces imposed upon it.

This seemingly simple model is actually quite complex and its construction requires some definite forethought as will be seen while working through the tutorial. The amount of hardware required to hold the cannon together and to anchor it to the ship, where it would likely be found, is enough to tax TurboCAD and requires special attention to the onboard ACIS settings.

Within the tutorial the reader will be led through each keystroke to produce all components of the antique cannon that are illustrated on the cover of the tutorial. Aside from learning how to draw in TurboCAD, the user will learn how to set up the drawing and how to insert standard lighting. TurboCAD Pro V18.1 - Octagonal Gazebo

From the Introduction:

Recently, I sent out a survey asking my tutorial customers how they felt about the tutorial materials I provide. Was it meeting their expectations? Did they like the format? Was it a good value for the cost? And, of course, if there were any particular fields or topics that they would like to see new tutorials. The responses clearly showed that the materials were meeting or surpassing expectations, were of great value and that the format was ideal . There were a few suggestions for new material and of those suggestions the greatest number asked for more in the fields of carpentry and cabinet making. It is with this in mind that I have chosen to pen TurboCAD Pro V18.1 – Octagonal Gazebo as the first post-questionnaire tutorial. The tutorial is based, for the most part, on free gazebo plans that I found on the internet.

I hope that you enjoy working through the tutorial.

Best regards,
Don

TurboCAD Pro V17.2 -  Oscillating Fan

From the Introduction:

While looking around my office for tutorial inspiration I spotted my trusty Sanyo fan that has run every day of every season without fail for more years than I can remember. It dawned on me that the fan would provide a number of challenges for the TurboCAD user. The base, with its unique neck, would provide a good opportunity to take the Lofting tool for a spin. The base, with its unique neck, along with the motor case would be sure to give the Fillet tool a run for its money; and what about all those cage wires? Would TurboCAD be able to manage them and allow a full render? Well, I am here to tell you that the fan tutorial ended up being quite a blast to create and TurboCAD managed it all in stride.

I hope that you enjoy working your way through this (my 75th) TurboCAD tutorial.

Best regards,
Don

TurboCAD Pro V17.1 - Anatomy of a TurboCAD House

From the Introduction:

I had been surfing the internet one day looking for tutorial inspiration when I came across a house cutaway that I just loved. I knew immediately that this was the route I wanted to go to showcase many of the TurboCAD architecture tools that exist. Matt Jennings replied that he was pleased that I liked his illustration and said that he was okay with basing the tutorial on it. Thanks Matt!

I hope that you enjoy the tutorial.

Best regards,
Don
